To begin with, Wreck it Ralph is one of my favorite movies of all time, up there with the Lego movie, so I was super excited to watch part 2.
I can’t even begin to explain how amazing of a movie “Wreck
it Ralph: Ralph Breaks the Internet” was! The first movie was absolutely
incredible, but this one exceeded my expectations in every single aspect. I
wonder how much the copyrights in the film cost Disney?? They had Twitter,
Instagram, Amazon, Cisco, YouTube, Pinterest, eBay… pretty much every single application…
you name it, and they did a fantastic job of staying relevant with today’s
culture. Not to mention that they had all the Disney princesses (is Vanellope a
princess now? probably not), Star Wars, and Marvel characters in the film, a
pretty ambitious mash up because the princesses had significant roles as well.
One thing that stuck out to me was how the Princesses
reacted in the film. In the beginning they were going over the qualities of the
princesses, and how some of them had magical items among other things, but the
common factor was that they all had a super strong male figure come to their
rescue. It was almost like a self-realization that Disney had because they
figured out how terrible of a job they did of portraying women.
One other thing that stood out was the way they portrayed social media. The shallowness of people to be interested in one thing for 10 minutes, but then move on and not pay attention like nothing happened. The part when Ralph looked at the comment section of his videos really got to me because those kind of things are so present in our society today, especially with cyberbullying, depression, and suicide, and man that part really hit home.
This movie taught children so many lessons. The first, was
to look introspectively at your actions, and see how they may be negatively
affecting you and those around you. When Ralph only cared about himself, he
kept Vanellope from reaching her dreams. Although Vanellope and Ralph had a
great time with each other’s company for six years, Vanellope was seeking out
change while Ralph sought the same thing over and over again. Shank was really
wise in saying that best friends can still be friends even if they follow two
completely different paths. I kinda felt for Ralph when he was on the mute
skype call with Vanellope and she mentioned that she didn’t want to stay in the
arcade anymore. Ralph basically only had one friend, and that friend was going
away, so he wanted to do anything he could to keep that friend. Unfortunately I
can’t say that it’s all Ralph’s fault because it was difficult to bear the
thought of losing my only friend if I was Ralph. I can say that Ralph did go a
bit too far by trying to sabotage Vanellope so that she could stay with him.
But he made up for it once he learned his lesson that he can’t hold others back
from following their dreams, even though it would hurt him.
The second lesson was to follow your dreams no matter the
cost, because real friends will stick with you no matter what. We can see this
lesson in the fact that Vanellope was empowered to follow her dreams of joining
Slaughter Race after the princesses encouraged her to find out what she really
wanted and not what Ralph wanted. At first, I thought Shank was just a terrible
person, but it turned out that she was actually pretty cool and really inspiring.
I don’t really do this much, but this movie really hit me and made me reflect
on my past and present behavior. I put this movie up there with The Lego Movie
in that it was an absolutely powerful film that inspires children, although
both in different ways.
The movie was sooooo funny, and I was probably the loudest
person at the screening laughing at all of the jokes. What am I doing with my
life… I’m laughing my heart out at children’s movies as a college student… but I
wouldn’t have it any other way.
The end credits scene was probably one of the best that I’ve
seen in any movie (including all the Marvel superhero movies)
Whoever made this film really hit it out of the park, probably one of the best films I've ever watched hands down.
Also, apparently Aunt Cass from Big Hero 6 is in the movie...
