Rylee Bowen: The Lion King Response

Image result for scar gifFirst things first. We need to talk about Scar. Easily one of the top villains Disney has created...right? (Ranked number 3 after Maleficent and the man who killed Bambi's mom) While Scar committed some truly terrible crimes, he had a pretty dark past. Mufasa and Zazu joke about him being a rug and them beating it. And its clear looking between the two brothers that Mufasa was raised in a different manner. Despite all of this, he had some pretty moralistic goals. Because Scar was an outcast, he grew up with the hyenas as his only friends. He saw how Mufasa's rule lead to food for the lions and other top predators, but left the hyenas starving. As King, he focused on getting food for the underdogs under his brother's rule, but clearly, his plan did not work because everyone starved. But even with those points, Scar killed his brother, attempted to kill his nephew, and sang about these plotted murders in a very Hitler inspired number. He clearly should value family more, but he does seem to care about Pride Rock.

The scene with Mufasa "teaching his son a lesson" ended with them laughing and play fighting. Mufasa seems that the perfect father figure. He teaches valuable lessons, while loving his family and protecting them from any harm. This most be why his death is one of the cruelest Disney has thought up.  Additionally, Simba completely blams himself over the death of his father. I'd be interested to know how long Simba spent in exile. He seems to age really quickly while Timon and  Pumbaa don't change at all.

Many people claim this story is identical to Hamlet. They both have murderous uncles and revolve around personal growth. I completely believe this! The story lines are basically the same. On a different note, this film was stunning. The animation and colors are so beautiful. I loved how everytime the lions would lay down, leaves and dust would blow out. There was so much attention thrown into the details of the animation. Additionally, the music and songs in this were incredible. Disney incorporated many African instruments and styles into these songs. I found Hakuna Matata to be annoying though. Its very unrealistic to just forget about your problems and move on. It has no growth, and the funny thing is I see this mantra everywhere. Disney clearly has power and reached a huge audience with this piece. Have worries! Learn from them! Its ok to be scared.
